To make the dough to slide easily on the peal, it is sprinkled with cornmeal. It is also possible to bake the meal on a barbecue grill and in in the Chicago-style variant, it gets baked on a pan.

The crust, which is the bottom of the flatbread is made in different styles in different variants. In some variants, it is very thin while in others it is very thick. The crust is usually plain in most cases, but some restaurants season it with ingredients such as cheese, herbs, or garlic among other.

If the right ingredients are used and the preparation method is good, the meal that results is a healthy one. However, because many US restaurant chains continue to use unhealthy ingredients, the meal has come under severe criticism. Fats, salt, and food energy are used in huge quantities, which makes it unhealthy.
