Chocolate Gift Baskets All Year Round

By Lucia Weeks

Everyone has faced this dilemma--shopping for a present for someone who already has everything, or perhaps you just don't know what they would like. Perhaps you ordered a gift online and it went out of stock or got lost in the mail. Instead of panicking and sending a gift card or IOU, consider chocolate gift baskets instead of traditional ones.

There is no shortage of variety when it comes to these baskets. Some may include boxes full of chocolates, while others could have those related to it, such as cocoa mix for cold winters nights. A few may specifically only have milk or dark chocolate, while some may have spiced or flavored confections for a twist. Still others could mix it up to add some variety.

Some selections may offer more than just plain chocolate. Among the many choices available are chocolate-dipped foods such as pretzels, marshmallows, puffed rice treats, cake pops and other sweet and salty treats. Still others may include non-food items that are related to this treat or its consumption. For example, a basket with cocoa might include mini marshmallows or a ceramic mug to put the cocoa in.

During the holidays, many of these gifts are widely available at grocery stores and mass merchandisers across the country. You could buy one, then gift it to a person who lives locally without issue. But what if you don't live in the same area as the person you want to give it to? There are many shops and online stores that will gladly have the basket delivered to a location of your choice. Some may include delivery as part of the price, while others may charge for it. The delivery could be through the mail, or they could use a dedicated service that hand delivers the gift to the recipient.

As with many things in life, there are a few things to consider before you pull the delivery trigger. Since chocolate melts very fast and easily, there is a good chance the weather in the recipient's area could cause it to devolve into a soupy mess. Consider the weather, especially in spring and summer, to ensure that the gift doesn't get ruined en route to your friend or loved one.

Many people only think to send gift baskets out during Christmas, but they really are good for many other holidays. Think about the chocolate bunnies and other confections for Easter. Valentine's Day is great because an entire basket is way better than a simple box of them. There are many other holidays besides Christmas where this would be a great, welcome treat.

Going beyond holidays, special occasions that are more personal in nature are also appropriate times to give a basket as a gift. Birthday boys and girls will appreciate the gift, as will anyone who maybe has recently been sick or even given birth. Or just send one to someone you love just because, for no real reason as a thoughtful surprise.

With so many occasions for buying this type of gift, there is no reason not to buy and send one to someone in your life. From close family members to work colleagues, these baskets are always much appreciated.
