Reasons Why Attack On BC Liberal Farmers Must Stop

By Donna Adams

Bill 15 that aims at taking the agricultural land of a section of the people is dictatorial in nature. The manner in which BC liberal farmers are being treated is not only dehumanizing but also disheartening. In civil rights activist will point at several reasons why these farmers must be protected and it is the purpose of this article to show why that protection is important.

Food security is a very important indicator of development in any given society or country. There would be no food security if the government, through unscrupulous means, partners with private developers to rob the people who are responsible for ensuring that there is food on the table. Having money to buy anything you want does not guarantee that you will buy it. That item or good which you intend to buy must first be made available, and so does food.

To add on the above, human rights indicate that every human being has a right to live a modest life. Therefore, when these framers are robbed of what belongs to them and their only sources of livelihood, it means that their rights are disregarded. That is how to make a society poor and perpetually depended on human aids like relief foods. That will be heart breaking, especially when the same people had their own pieces of land which were taken by private developers.

Failure to stand with these people against other forces will mean that the poor majority have to revolt. That is the making of a civil war, something that no society should ever wish for because it kills all the developments made. Wars are retrogressive in nature, and they can be avoided by respecting the rights of other people and treating them with respect.

The lack of support by the government exposes the hypocrisies that are manifested in the political arena. This, in turn, will point at huge flaws within the government structures and cause mistrust among people. Besides, there will be difficulty carrying out normal functions of the government in the case where the subjects do not support the government. To avoid getting to that level, financial aid needs to be given to these farmers.

Again, looking at theories of oppression in philosophy, it will be noted that the oppressed and the oppressor are dehumanized. In simple terms, you cannot dehumanize someone without dehumanizing yourself. What is being done to these farmers is dehumanization, and that act alone makes even the people behind the oppression lesser humans. This should not be the case and, thus, this oppression must stop.

There ought to be ownership by the people if the government wants to start a project that is intended to help them. Any project, no matter how good, will fail if the people are not involved from the start. Imposing projects on people is the reason why societies rebel against governments.

The development is good, but it must also have a human face. What this means is that people should not suffer just because some developmental project has been brought to them. This is the case of the private developers against the farmers, which must be changed in time to avoid future adverse repercussions.
