How Surreal Comedies Work And How They Are Made

By Brenda Snyder

Absurd things are always happening, and there are more of these than many realize. Directors of films and companies making movies have cachet for creating these, works that depict surrealism but also realistic in one sense. A lot of movies have been made this way, sometimes with great directors helming while making money.

Not only is surrealism a good and novel element in films, it has been a movement in art, novels and theater. There used to be such a good demand for specifically surreal comedies unlike what we have today, because audiences nowadays are accustomed to the surreal. This means that it is an already accepted element that does not turn off audiences.

This was related to Dadaism, a movement that was wild in its conceptions of the bizarre and the shocking. Surrealist imagery is connected to the subconscious brain, the one very active when people are sleeping. So artists know that it is very much a thing with humans, and even have connections to everyday life.

There were times these kind of comedy created waves on all sorts of art genres. For the films in Hollywood, a primary concern is if it will be commercially successful while achieving good critical reviews. People like Scorsese have come out with their own hit features that use all sorts of absurdist plots and themes.

Today the people watching features do not have to know the precise surreal elements that are present. One reason is because this has become such a casual element for people, disbelief is suspended easily and has become common practice. The audiences here know that the surrealism is already a given as storylines are improved by tech, even the obviously surreal films will not be labeled like that.

Technically, all things are possible with film today, and directors and screenwriters really make use of this. The advantage for them is that most of the technical means were directly developed for filmmaking. But technology is not the maker of surrealism or its elements, because much of it can be based on the storyline.

Dramatists and other sorts of writers often use this, developing ideas that are used for plays or features. In plays, surrealistic scenes might be played out very realistically, with a sense of rootedness to reason. This has become one of the primary qualities of those humorous comedies that have been popular.

The production of movies like these should not be reliant on technology. But it is not exclusive to the use of any special effects that may apply. The more advanced or better quality movies can be told straight up, with just the basic technical equipment for features, and the surrealism will be better pronounced or played up according to how a director wants it to work.

Lists of items that have this type of absurd humor are available on the internet. Reviews are checkered, since many are B levels and some good ones have entered the mainstream. The range is relevant, because their are also items that go from minor to extremes, and a good director knows how to work these in to the plot.
