The Do's & Don'ts Of Typography For Website Design Companies

By Arthur Williams

In general terms, typography is the art of designing and arranging text so that it can be easily read. There's an artistic element to this, as you may already know, but the ways that website design companies use it must be taken into account. Not all of them understand the sensitive nature of typography in general, which is why it's important to make note of how it can be implemented here. To make things easier, in this respect, consider the following do's & don'ts.

DO make sure that your work is legible. While it's commendable for website design companies to be creative, it shouldn't come at the expense of legibility. Companies such as Lounge Lizard will tell you that, when it comes to typography, less is definitely more. What this means is that you should make it a point to create type that's legible. Failure to do so will reflect poorly on the sites that you're responsible for.

DON'T underestimate the size of text. As anyone that specializes in typography will tell you, different text sizes come together in order to create a sense of hierarchy. What this means is that each size will possess a different level of importance. For example, if basic-sized text is used for most copy, much larger text can serve as headlines and sub-headers alike. As you'll come to learn, text size serves more than simply cosmetic purposes.

DO consider how closely font styles and brands connect. Another rule of typography is to ensure that font styles and brands are as closely connected as possible. For instance, if the owner of a local burger restaurant wants a new website, he or she may require a new font. For a restaurant that sells burgers, it would make sense for more basic styles to be used. This is just one example, but it should give you a general understanding of why communication is a vital component of typography.

DON'T forget to implement crowd control with your text. One of the most helpful components in web design is space. This is especially true with typography, seeing as how text can become relatively cramped. This is where crowd control can prove useful, as it will help you make the most out of the negative space that you have. Anyone that understands typography will tell you that crowd control matters.
