By Etta Bowen

The ability to enjoy reading is very advantageous that comes naturally to some while others need to work at it a bit. Typically, the earlier and more frequently a young person is exposed to literature, the better many of their key life skills will tend to be. Girls generally gravitate to this activity easily, though it may take a childrens book for boys specifically to encourage some males.

Generally speaking, young females are more excited to sit and read, whereas the males tend to be more active and distracted, though this is not all inclusive. Reluctant readers, and enthusiastic ones alike, come in both genders and for a variety of reasons. Once the issue has been identified it makes finding a solution much simpler.

Certain medically based conditions like low concept comprehension abilities, dyslexia or attention deficit disorders are often sited as the cause of a person's lack of reading enthusiasm. Many say the reason they do not enjoy the activity is that it is boring because they can not subject matter that keeps them entertained or interested. This is why may librarians and teachers tend to compile lists filled with titles and authors that come highly recommended and span the gamut of topics.

There are many varied topics geared primarily towards the interests of young males from toddler age to early adulthood. Some of these involve classic scenarios such as science, sports, mythology, history, vehicles and adventure, while others are more imaginative like dinosaurs, the supernatural, graphic novelizations, fantastical creatures and their worlds, aliens and Manga series. Finding one that is not boring should be no real problem.

Many adults do not find their child's disinterest in literature to be a big issue, though there are a number of reasons why they should be concerned and encourage the young to read anything at all, including newspapers or magazines. Reading leads to better school work due to better writing, comprehension, communication and both critical and creative thinking skills. Readers also tend to exhibit higher imagination and an improved vocabulary.

There are a number of ways parents, teachers or mentors may ignite the spark and encourage a young person to take an interest in reading. For many children, listening to someone read aloud, and discussing the story, is the best way to start. This should be done often and with much enthusiasm.

One technique for discovering what a child enjoys is to try reading them stories on several different topics. When they show a particular interest, encourage it by sharing more titles of similar style. Take them to the library and allow them to search for other titles belonging to their desired niche and perhaps discover new ones as well.

Reading is a wonderful skill that can be a great asset to a person throughout the course of their life. It helps one expand their knowledge on any topic, to learn new things, go on an adventure, get lost in a fictional world, travel through time or simply be entertained. The ability to enjoy the written word is a gift that never grows old and has an endless bounty of benefits to offer.
