Ever since Darwin published his momentous work titled On the Origin of the Species a fierce debate has raged in both scientific and religious circles. Creationists strongly reject the idea that species evolve over time. They argue that the earth, in fact the entire universe has been created and that it is not a very old system. Scientists largely accept the theory proposed by Darwin. However, there are still numerous Christian arguments against evolution.
The main objection used by religious groups and creationists is that they belief that the Bible is true, that it contains no errors and that it unequivocally state that the earth and everything else in the universe has been created by God. They say that the Bible provide irrefutable proof that creation was achieved out of nothing and that everything has been created exactly as they meant to be.
Religious groups also argue that the very fact that the universe exists is proof that there is a God. Since the universe is not eternal and since it had a very definite beginning, as even scientists agree, then there must be an eternal external force that actually caused the universe to come into being. They say that the universe could not have come into being by fluke or by accident but only through intelligent design.
The Second Law of Thermodynamics is also often used by believers and creationists. In terms of this universally accepted law things tend to become less ordered as time goes on. Decay takes place on both minute and grand scales. Stars burn out, matter deteriorates and structures crumble eventually. This is in direct opposition to the theories of Darwin that says that things and beings tend to become much more ordered over time.
Creationists also like to point to fossil records to strengthen their case. They say that fossil records show no evidence of evolving. There are no fossils of creatures halfway between birds and reptiles, for example. They further say that it would be impossible for any creature to stay alive whilst in the process of evolving. All fossils found thus far are fully formed and they do no show significant change over time.
Opponents of Darwin also point out that human speech is unique and that even extensive efforts failed to teach any other life form to communicate on the same level. They also point out that the human ability to exercise free will is unique and that it has always been like that. These abilities have not evolved but have been part of the human make up from the earliest times.
Creationists often point out that the theories proposed by Darwin place a heavy emphasis on the survival of the fittest. Yet, they say, everything on earth is in complex relationships with other beings. No species can survive on its own. The inter dependence of species points towards intelligent design rather than a fight for survival. This would not be possible if each species evolved independently.
There can be little doubt that the debate regarding evolution will continue for some time. Christians remain convinced that there cannot be a logical explanation for the gradual evolving of species. Scientists, on the other hand say that the evidence is conclusive.
