Solving Fertility Problems With Intrauterine Fertilization

By Deborah Carter

From the earliest days of human existence, people have been concerned about their ability to reproduce. This is what has led to the prominence of fertility-related rituals and other cultural elements in cultures around the world. Sadly though, the struggle against infertility is just as old as the cultural references to fertility. Today, thanks to advances in science and technology there is hope. For many couples around the world, alternative methods such as intrauterine fertilization are making a world of difference to their lives.

Infertility circles this type of fertility treatment falls in a category called ART or assisted reproductive technology. These methods are becoming increasingly popular among persons who wish to extend their families. It helps couples and individuals to overcome fertility challenges by eliminating the need for the traditional method of conception, sexual intercourse.

Also known as IUI, the procedure involves the insertion of retrieved and sometimes treated sperm into the uterine cavity. This makes it easier for fertilization of the egg to take place. Naturally, therefore, the procedure is typically done within the same time frame as ovulation.

Typically couples who are facing issues related to sperm health are referred for this treatment. The health of the sperm is evaluated through a semen analysis. The semen analysis reveals the shape, motility, and quantity of sperm in the semen.

Before an IUI is performed the fertility doctor will need to verify that the woman's fallopian tubes are clear and healthy. This is done through a test called an HSG. Blocked fallopian tubes make it impossible for an IUI to work as the egg must travel down through the tubes to meet the sperm, get fertilized and then travel down to the uterine cavity. Additionally, the doctor will need to verify that the woman is ovulating and is releasing healthy eggs.

Sometimes people who have no serious fertility issues use this method. For these people, the challenge with extending their families arises from other situations. Women without male partners for instance, often rely on donor sperm and this method for conception. Couples comprising men also use this method but they usually also require the assistance of a surrogate mother.

Like many other ART treatments, IUI increases the chance for the conception of multiples. Couples and individuals who opt for this route to conception, therefore, must be prepared for this possibility. Fertility doctors often provide some amount of counseling in preparation for this. The chance for multiples is more significant when ovulation induction is included and so for those who wish to reduce this likelihood induction of ovulation could be eliminated if possible.

In this modern world, ancient issues such as infertility are being erased as science and technology provide solutions. Numerous couples and individuals around the world can attest to it. Treatments such as IUIs are giving people a hope they would not have had in years gone by.
