What To Look For When Buying Commercial Grade Refrigerators With Energystar Efficiency

By Cindy H. Cassidy

Buying commercial refrigerators for use in the food industry calls for somewhat different considerations than shopping for standard household appliances does. It makes sense for business owners to choose commercial grade refrigerators with EnergyStar ratings that will run more affordably and also do less harm to the environment.

The Energy Star label provides consumers with the assurance that a product which bears it meets the minimum requirements necessary for it to be classified as a refrigerator that will provide ultimate energy savings and produce lower amounts of greenhouse gases that damage the environment. Such models are typically about 40 percent more efficient in their consumption of energy as they have been built with special features that make this possible.

A specific set of criteria needs to be met if a refrigerator is to be granted Energy Star status. The use of such appliances is expected to provide substantial savings to the user within a maximum period of time. Technology used to produce the added efficiency must be non-proprietary in nature and equally accessible to all manufacturers, and this quality needs to be quantitatively measurable.

The business owner must determine which type of fridge will be most closely suited to their needs. Different designs are built to accommodate various types of food and beverages in terms of shape, and size of compartments inside them and they also have varying kinds of doors. Besides the level of energy efficiency a refrigerator offers it's also advisable to take these factors into consideration as well.

Aspects one will want to factor in when selecting a commercial fridge include the design and function of the doors and the compartments inside it. The particular volume and type of food and drinks it is going to contain will primarily determine which type of model is the best match. Energy efficiency is important, but it's also a good idea for buyers to be mindful of these details.

The compressor is one of the most significant components to the operation of a refrigerator as it maintains its level of coldness. Some models feature a top-mounted compressor while others have it located on the bottom. The former are often more expensive, but they last longer since the compressor is less susceptible to over-heating. Although the bottom-mounts provide more space and are somewhat easier to repair, they usually don't last as long.

The size of the refrigerator is also something that must be evaluated before purchasing. It needs to fit within the available space, and also within the price limit of the business. While as a rule, larger refrigerators consume more energy, those with an Energy Star label will generally still perform efficiently.
