By Dorothy Stone

Someday everyone is going to be on their own, where they won't have mom to cook for them. Going off to college can be difficult when all you know how to is to make a toasted cheese or scrambled egg. Basic cooking skills are necessary. It is something one has to take a look at before venturing out there.

Knowing how to make things like chicken, pasta, stir fry, sauces and salad will help you as you persevere with the next couple of years ahead. It means that you won't simply have to be stuck making sandwiches and eggs. On the flip side, it means that you don't have to be ordering in pizza. As a student, it is important to weary of your budget.

There are few things that you can concentrate on in order to fill you up, eat healthy and to stay budget wise at the same time. Many people enjoy eating the same thing with some variety the whole time. This can refer to pasta with different sauces. However, one also does have to look at the amount of carbohydrates you are taking in. Meal planning can be helpful in this regard.

Salad is something to think about, should you be eating a lot of carbohydrates because it fills you up. But it will also be able to act as a meal on its own. There are so many varieties available and you can learn to be creative in the way that you make this. Some people use fruit with this, such as with nectarine or orange.

It is nice to start off simple. It is not necessary to be eating a huge amount of ingredients in one bowl. Of course, you can make this more elaborate, but it is a good idea to keep it simple initially, along with a dressing that you make as well.

Choose your leaves, throw in some cheese of your choice and choose chickpeas, red onion or avocado. You can swap this for crunchy veggies with a nice creamy dressing. A nice easy dressing consists of 1 part balsamic to 3 parts olive oil. You can make a healthy yogurt dressing with olive oil as well.

Learning to grill is a task which would come to good use. There is nothing better than a grilled chicken burger. This is easily made on a grill pan. You can buy a packet of stir fried vegetables and just add a little soy sauce.

You can experiment with Jasmine and brown rice. Some people go on to learn about risotto which turns out to be filling and affordable, depending on what you put in the dish. It is a good idea to stick to dishes which can be stretched out. You can even freeze these and have them on another night so that you are not eating leftovers for the next couple of nights.
