Shroom Burgers Can Come In Many Delicious Varieties

By Daniel Olson

After traveling to a major city that has a lot to do and see, it is common to want to bring the local cuisine home. Even if a person managed to transport that pizza slice or chicken that can only be found in one city, sometimes it is hard to separate that little taste of heaven. For those who know their way around a kitchen, there are some ways to capture the taste of things like shroom burgers or sweet treats discovered while on vacation.

While these are normally made with a Portobello mushroom cap, the smaller white button or brown crimini may be an excellent substitute. As there are a few versions of this dish from home cooks and recipe hackers, anyone can use their own preferences for cheese and filling. Although the original version found at regional burger chains is fried in a large vat of canola oil, smaller versions can be baked in a regular oven or place on a grill.

While the original calls for a potato bun, some may use the usual white or wheat hamburger bun. Between the buns are a couple of lettuce slices, a tomato, and burger sauce. Although there are many variations to be found on cooking forums and blogs, this is a basic mixture of mayo, ketchup, mustard, and relish. Some cooks may add a sprinkle of dried herbs or squeeze of lemon juice for an extra layer of flavor.

This is a fairly simple recipe to make and has the best of many worlds for most vegetarians. However, if there is a vegan in the group, there are nut or plant cheeses that melt like their dairy cousin. In this instance, crumbled plant or tempeh bacon may be added to the mix for a little texture and smoky flavor.

Another great thing about these recipes is that anyone can create a version that suits their cooking style. For instance, a lot of people do not care to eat foods that have cooked in large pots of oil. It can lead to unhealthy eating habits and there are alternatives to deep frying food that do not involve using a lot of saturated fats.

Other vegetables, as well as a cheese with less fat content, can be added to the filling. Mushroom stems can be chopped, as well as cooked purple potatoes or squash. Smoked mozzarella and provolone are not only flavorful but are lower in cholesterol and calories. Another way to cut out the bad stuff would be to use yogurt instead of cheese as a filler but sprinkle a few shreds of preferred cheese on top.

While some consider potato buns to be better on the nutrition scale than most white or wheat versions, this can be treated like any other burger. Instead of using a few small lettuce leaves, wrapping in several large pieces of Romaine or iceberg lettuce is a healthy start. Whole wheat flatbread or tortillas are also good for making wraps or a purse style sandwich.

When making these at home, try to have fun with it. Perhaps add a little fresh garlic or sweet onion pieces to the filling, or mix in Italian bread crumbs with the panko mixture. Sometimes flavored oil blends can give it an extra layer of flavor with hints of hot pepper, rosemary, or sage.
