By Robert Lee

You may be reading this article right now for the plain reason that your are in Fort Lauderdale at the moment. And while you are in Florida, you may have a hankering for some great Greek food that your friends have been telling about. Due to this you want to find the best Greek food Fort Lauderdale establishments around. Do read on in this article to give you an inkling on how to look for one that is authentic.

A taverna is what one would call the Greek restaurant. The usual menu on the tavern are mostly spit roasted and grilled meats, which are what Greeks are well known for. What is most common in these places are the souvlaki. These are basically considered as heavy snacks and fast food and consist of bite sized pieces of meat and vegetables that are seasoned well and grilled on a skewer, much like a shish kebab.

You should also look out for the gyro, which is another Greek favorite served in the taverna. This is basically the same spit roasted and grilled meats and vegetables now served in a pita, a flat bread resembling the Mexican tortilla. The ingredients also include onions and a fair serving of tzatziki sauce, a yogurt based concoction. It is also best if the tzatziki be homemade and not bought off the shelf.

A hallmark of Greek food is that the ingredients have to be fresh, especially when it comes to the vegetable sand the fish. Most fish fare in these restaurants usually are placed into salads and soups, with only the meat being grilled and such. The use of seafood other than fish in soups and salads are also to be expected.

Freshly cooked and not heated is the cardinal rule in the taverna. Your food may take a while to serve and this will mean that it was most likely built from scratch and not, thus eating will take a bit of time.

It is expected that wine is always served during meals, particularly dinner. And there should be a respectable wine list offering to pair with the dishes that you order and enjoy. It is also interesting to note that in Europe and Greece, children are allowed a bit of wine also, and this may also be true of the tavern you will visit. Just make sure that they do not drink too much though.

Pricing should also be reasonable. For this kind of food, although delicious should likewise not be expensive either. Gyro platters and similar servings should not cost you over ten to fifteen dollars on average. Likewise wraps must not go over eight dollars in general. All this of course holds true unless you are in a very upscale restaurant. These prices in general will hold true on average.

And of course the final test of authenticity will be to you to look at the customers themselves. If they number a fair number of Mediterranean types, then you can be sure that you are in the right place.
