Taking The Right Steps For Scoliosis Prevention

By Carl Sullivan

Scoliosis is an abnormal health condition that makes the spinal cord to bend. The spinal cord is designed to be straight so that humans can stand upright but when measures for scoliosis prevention are not taken in time, the condition may develop and the victim may have it till old age. To prevent this, it is important to know what causes it and seek ways to prevent or cure the condition.

There are different factors that can make people develop the curved spine. Sometimes, children get it from birth when complications arise in the womb. Usually, curved spine conditions that are caused during delivery can be corrected easily as the child grows up.

Neuromuscular scoliosis is another form which occurs as a result of some poorly developed muscles and nerves. Body muscles and nerves get bad overtime as a result of several factors such as cerebral palsy, spina bifida and paralysis. People with cerebral palsy find it difficult to coordinate their movement and walk properly. Sometimes, the problem develops from birth when the fetus suffers brain injury.

Again, one may consider looking at the degenerative and idiopathic cases. While the degenerative case can be linked to serious damage to the spinal cord, the idiopathic case does not have any known cause for now; this is why many people think that it may be transferable from parents to offspring. Back surgery and osteoporosis are other factors that can lead to having the degenerative type.

No matter its form or cause, spine curvature is not something anyone would love to experience. People with this condition have low self esteem and find it quite difficult to address others in the public because of the way they appear. It is quite embarrassing to stand in the midst of people when it is difficult to stand upright.

Curved spinal cords may be difficult to notice until it has fully developed. To avoid its full manifestation, one should also look out for signs such as uneven shoulders, waist and hip as well as a disproportional development of the two shoulder blades. As the condition worsens, the spinal cord turns a bit and may also carry the ribs along its new direction. This is why prevention methods should be sought as early as possible.

One of the most important steps to take is to seek the advice of a medical doctor. The first step that will be taken is performing some diagnostic tests such as taking an x-ray. When an x-ray is done and it is discovered that the teenager may have a curved spine, the doctor may suggest the use of back brace. Braces are able to correct growing spines if worn for at least 16 hours per day for some months or years. Children with curved spines can hasten their treatment by wearing braces.

Failure to treat this condition as soon as the symptoms begin to manifest can lead to more complications such as paralysis, chronic pain and nerve damage. Children with back pain do not find it funny especially in school when they see their mates sit comfortably for hours receiving lectures and studying privately. It may also be an avenue for infection and bleeding when the spinal cord shifts out of its position.
