Choose Funny Dragon Books For Boys

By Rosella Campbell

Dragons are mythical creatures that have been around for centuries. Their popularity never seems to wane. In the past, they have usually been depicted as fierce creatures that can torch whole villages with one breathe. In modern stories, however, the characters of the dragons are very diverse. Funny dragon books for boys cater to their fascination with dragons but can make them laugh out loud and may even result in a lifelong appreciation for reading.

Dragons have appeared throughout history and in many different cultures. Dragons were usually portrayed as winged, fire-breathing, ferocious creatures. In the stories written for children today, they may still be fierce but they also portray other characteristics. Some of them are even lonely or shy and looking for a friend. Others act as protectors but there are also those who need to be protected or rescued by brave children.

The imagination of authors is given free reign when creating their characters. They are grumpy, magical, mystical, humorous, quirky and shy. There are sky dragons, ice dragons and snaggle toothed dragons. They are those who are not mean at all but lonely and looking for friendship. There are even dragons that are afraid of mice.

Traditionally fire-breathing dragons bring destruction with every breath. The dragons in these stories for kids often use their fiery breathe for other purposes such as toasting marshmallows. Self conscious dragons may have difficulty breathing fire and some do not breathe fire at all. It is often the juxtaposition of fantasy and the mundane that creates the comedy.

In the stories of old, dragons would eat birds, snakes, rats, bats, or even humans, especially children. Modern day dragons in stories for children have very different tastes. Some of them are confirmed vegetarians. Others have a taste for tacos and can be enticed to attend a party by supplying a huge bucket of them. Unfortunately, chaos results when they eat the salsa.

The behavior of dragons in stories is unpredictable to say the least. Just when a child thinks it is great fun to have a scaly fire-breather as a pet, they may be introduced to the complications involved in having to take responsibility for it. It is often the combination of the extremely ordinary and practical with the absurd and fantastic that creates the comedy.

Children do not appreciate stories that too obviously try to bring across lessons. However, they will always be extremely receptive to a story with interesting characters and a well constructed plot, particularly one which makes them laugh. The best authors can often convey some message about relationships, self image and other issues without being obvious at all. When this is done with humor, it often has an influence on a child and can even make a lasting impact.

Dragons have always held a fascination, particularly for children and this shows no sign of abating. The stories for children currently being written with dragons as characters are often highly entertaining and beautifully illustrated. You can find one suitable for your particular child by examining book lists online and reading reviews written by other parents.
