It is not just the baby that benefits from nursing. The mother also gains many advantages. Mothers that nurse are much less likely to develop breast cancer, arthritis and many types of heart disease. Nursing delays the return of menstruation and fertility, giving the new mother a well earned break and allowing her body to recuperate. Nursing mothers also stand less of a chance to develop after birth depression.

There are instances where it may be better not to nurse a newborn baby. Women who use recreational drugs and consume alcohol may put their own babies at risk. Certain types of medication may also have an adverse effect on the breast milk. Very few medical conditions prevent nursing. The best course of action is to ask advice from a doctor if there is any doubt whatsoever.

Babies are precious and they deserve the very best care. Giving them breast milk is giving them a real advantage. Women that baulk from breast feeding due to cosmetic reasons deprive both themselves and their newborn babies.
