Ideas On Protecting Against Elephant Poachers

By Angela Wagner

The population of elephants is decreasing at a rate of eight percent every year due to poaching. Recent research indicates that most ivory sold in different parts of the world comes from elephants that have been recently killed. With advanced technology, researchers are now able to determine whether ivory present in the market comes from old stashes of ivory or recently killed elephants. These findings have led to numerous campaigns that aim at protecting against elephant poachers.

There are various campaigns focused on elephant poaching. Conservationists are calling out on support from government authorities, citizens and groups to be part of protecting wildlife. Ivory traders are in a good position to stop poaching. All they need to do is to avoid trading trophies which is on the rise. Here are some effective ways to stop animal poaching and ivory trade.

Buying ivory goods is a major contributor to poaching in any country. This means eliminating ivory trade is crucial to keep poachers away from animal reserves. Avoid buying items such as trinkets, dominos, fans, pool cues and jewelry. Staying away from such products discourages sellers forcing them to close business. Governments, on the other hand, should regulate antique ivory to ensure individuals have limited access to trophies available in the market.

Elephants need safe habitats which allow them to live freely without human interference. Poachers find their way to wildlife because most coffee and timber farms are located near wildlife reserves. To ensure elephants are safe in their habitats, coffee and timber buyers are advised to buy certified products. This step aims at discouraging illegal activities in plantations locates near animal reserves.

Elephants are valuable assets in any economy. They attract tourists, meaning they increase the of a country. However, elephants are undervalued because most individuals do not know they are worth a lot especially when alive. State authorities need to declare these animals as treasures to promote their well being in reserves. Understanding the worth of elephants is key to protecting them against human poaching.

It is impossible for everyone to get involved in wildlife conservation activities directly. Conservationists understand not everyone is willing to live in the jungle and dedicate their lives in protecting elephants, but you can offer your support in various ways. Attend events held by wildlife conservation groups, give donations and be part of various groups actively involved in wildlife conservation. Most countries have formed networks which bring individuals in different parts of the world together to eliminate poaching. Join a network to help stop animal poaching.

Elephants need freedom and sufficient room to survive and live in groups. That is why animal services are against circuses and zoos. These places lock elephants in limited spaces, meaning they do not enjoy freedom. You can be part of the solution by staying away from zoos and circuses which have a record of mistreating elephants.

Adopting an elephant is a good idea for anyone willing to protect animals from poachers. It can be hard to adopt an elephant and take them home, but it is realistic to fund conservationist programs. Wildlife programs accept donations in exchange of a photo and regular reports of the elephant you wish to adopt.
