Why Political Satire Is Important To Democracies

By Andrew Thompson

People have always kept to humor as a way of addressing their concerns, especially when the need is very urgent. There is one old Greek satirist whose politically colored comedies are standards in the classic sense. The times have come and gone for ancient Greece, but democracies have been known to have lots of differing opinions.

Where men choose to live is where their politics are, and in democracies, everyone is supposed to have a right to be heard. Political satire is one way for people to express themselves, especially on the most sensitive topics. Rulers in a democracy should take it in stride, and satire is something established as platforms for analysts, writers, and political pundits.

Once, it was the written word which was the most powerful vehicle for political expression, whether the citizen is against the government or not. Mankind has taken a long time to view democracy as something really workable. But even in the most enlightened democracies, making jokes out of the mistakes of politicians can be the key to making things work.

With the capital of this nation, newspapers, magazines and TV programs consider it nothing extraordinary when they want to do some satirical pieces on politicians and laws. Not everyone is perfect, but the sum of all parts of a democracy can often come together perfectly at times. It is towards these times, when important decisions or laws are being made, that satirists look forward to.

Most people are always interested in the many things that satirists make up every now and then. And these artists may be found working on TV, film, or playing with bands, in fact all kinds of art. What they do is to tie in current events with their work, all about the things that are happening in the republic and the funny ways they can be interpreted.

A lot of things are implied in this category, which also makes it the vehicle for dissent. Since democratic governments must ideally give individuals their freedom, dissent will often be present. In America, it is a way of life, and loads of folks express their views through this kind of satire with things like vehicular stickers.

For regimes that are reactionary, it is one of the few ways that people can be informed or a way to challenge the government. Democracies may seem to be the majority among nations, but in many nations folks get shot regularly because they challenge men in power. It will often depend on what the powers that be think they are capable of doing.

In a sense that it is a very relevant expression for the times, this sort of humor is often very popular. Because folks see in it an extension of their views, and supporting it is an expression of how they want things to be. A lot of entertainers have made careers out of watching politicians and commenting on the funny ways they act or try to act.

Satire is also the vehicle for watchdogs, of those who warn society what can potentially happen when politicians are simply given their leave to do what they want. Politicos are often very sensitive to this, but in a constructive way, because they also want to themselves seen as people with the correct opinions. Thus humor in politics helps democratic societies to have balance and stability.
