Choices For Custom Hunting Knives Texas

By Christopher Young

Go into any decent sporting goods store, and you will find a whole lot of hunting gear, including weapons to kill your prey. You can choose a cross bow or rifle, but either way, you will also need a good knife. Custom hunting knives Texas are a necessity for any hunting trip, and make a great gift for your fellow hunters that lets them know how you care.

When you choose to make a custom knife, you get to choose from two main body styles. The first is a folding one, in which the blade literally folds into the handle to make it small and compact. The other main type is a static blade, where there is no folding, so the blade is usually larger and not hollow at all. They are great for field dressing your prey.

After you decide whether to go for a folding or static knife, you then have to decide how long you want the blade to be. You can go very small, or much larger, depending on what your needs are. The length will help determine the final cost, so keep that in mind as well. The longer the blade, the more material needs to be used, and the higher the cost.

Speaking of materials, that is the next big decision you have to make. There are many materials to choose from. One of the most popular is stainless steel, because it is lightweight and relatively inexpensive compared to other options. Plus, it does not rust, so it can be used in any type of weather. You can also choose ceramic, carbon steel, or other special materials as well.

Then you must choose how long you want the handle to be. For folding knives, the length is usually determined by the blade length, but for static ones, you have some wiggle room. It needs to be big enough to fit comfortably in the palm of the hand of the user, so keep that in mind as well.

The size is a very important choice, but you also need to choose the material. Much like the blades, you have a wealth of choices, including good old fashioned metal or wood, which are the most common. However, you can really go all out and get one made of bone, perhaps that of one of your prey. You could also go with plastic if you want a cheaper, more lightweight option.

There are some optional things you can do as well, such as an inscription. Your name of the name of the person you are gifting it to can all be used. Or you can make it more personal with a message or favorite quote. As long as it fits the length of the blade or handle, you can get it inscribed for a more personal look.

Another option is to have a custom cover made, which is sometimes called a sheath. Like the rest of the knife, you will have lots of options, including material, colors and more. Leather works really well and lasts a long time, but plastic such as vinyl or even heavy canvas are also great, affordable options. Ask your artisan and they will point you in the right direction.
