When visiting a new destination, you definitely want to learn about their local culture. Food is an important part of every society and an experience you definitely want to get on your vacation. As a foodie traveler, below is a guide to enjoying an authentic Greek cuisine.

Do your research in advance. It is important to reads lots of literature on the authentic dishes in the destination you are planning to visit. If you know a friend who has been to Greece before, ask them about the foods to try. In fact, it is even recommended to request them to link you up with a local. There are also tons of information that you can from the internet, especially from travel websites.

If you cannot get a direct referral, do not sweat it as there are lots of other ways out. On arriving in Athens, you will find many natives who are willing to help you make the best out of your trip. They will share with you their favorite memories, experiences and most importantly, their cuisines. A native will also be able to tell you about their favorite restaurants, which you may not find on any travel site.

Take enough time to adjust to your new environment. It is not advisable to rush out for an exotic meal immediately you arrive in Athens. Experts advise that you should give your body time to relax, particularly after a long flight. Taking lots of water is encouraged. You can also start by walking around and eating foods that you are familiar with. Take it easy at the beginning.

When you are finally set to go for a local cuisine, lower your expectations. The restaurants will naturally look different from what you left back at home. In fact, the hygienic standards may be lower and venues crowded. However, those are actually the indications that a place serves indigenous meals. Remember, the tastiest foods are found in places that may not be so organized.

You do not have to follow all the tourist office recommendations. Most travel agents and hotel staffs will refer you to restaurants that are liked by tourists. However, when it comes to native food, you need to visit the restaurants that are in hidden places. So long as your safety is guaranteed, you are good to go.

Take time to visit markets around. It is important to explore where local foods are sold if you want to see different types of fish, fruits and vegetables. While there, do not hesitate to ask questions about anything that catches your attention. To get favorable responses, remain friendly, smile and use sign language if you have to. Talking to natives will help you make the right choices at the eateries.

To enjoy the best dishes on your vacation in Greece, eat what the locals eat. There is no point in traveling all the way to eat something that you can get back at home. Therefore, when looking for an authentic experience, avoid restaurants in tourist areas. Get out of your comfort zone and discover something new.
