Kahlua Drinks From Mexico

By Marie Zingle

Kahlua a coffee flavored liqueur actually has a Mexican run base. This liqueur takes a while to make as the sugarcane and the coffee beans uses to make it are handpicked during the harvest season which runs from October to March.

After the beans have been handpicked they are processed in order to extract what we know as the coffee beans. The coffee beans are then dried, after which the husk is taken off. The coffee beans are then placed in burlap bags so that they age to perfection which gives us the great flavor that we love. The beans are then roasted.

Kahlua cocktails and products typically have an alcohol content of twenty percent in most regions. In Ohio the content may be slightly higher. A higher end version sold in Australia, the U.S., and Canada, has a content of 36%. But, this version is only available in Mexico. It is less sweet and is especially helpful in increasing the metabolism of fat.

After seven years both the sugarcane and the coffee is taken to the distillery where the coffee gets turned into an extract. The extract is mixed with the sugarcane mixture, caramel and vanilla is added. Then it is left for two months before it is bottled and filtered. All of this is done before you can go to the liquor store and buy the liqueur to make those great tasting drinks.

The seven different varieties of Kahlua each contain different calorie amounts, depending on the flavoring present. French vanilla has about 103 calories per ounce, while Standard and Espresso Kahlua each have about 53 calories per ounce. The other five varieties are Ready to Drink, Mocha, Hazelnut and Peppermint Mocha.

The alcohol present in drinks with Kahlua can help to lower fat metabolism, despite the fact that Kahlua contains no calories originating from fat. Most of the fat consumed is converted into acetate by the liver, although a small amount is converted into fat. In general, all the flavors of Kahlua mixed drinks contain between 11 and 11.5 carbohydrate grams per each ounce, most of these coming from the sugarcane and other flavorings added to the drink.

If the regular Kahlua is not to your taste you can also buy it with peppermint mocha, hazelnut, mocha, French vanilla and Especial. Each one has its own particular flavor along with the amount of calories. None of Kahlua's calories come from fat but the alcohol in it does lower your fat metabolism, so even a small amount of the liqueur that you consume converts directly into fat.

Kahlua is not known for its fat burning properties, as alcohol slows the process. But, it can be a lower calorie alternative to a thick milk shake on a warm evening, especially if the flavored versions are served on ice.
