Pier Seafood Found On Redondo Beach CA

By Sharron Cantu

The sea is a rich source of various forms of life which serve as food for human beings. Redondo Beach CA is one of the places that are known for being rich in pier seafood around the world. Seafood includes different forms of animals and plants which provide a lot of nutritional nutrients to human bodies. Shellfish and fish are the major animals consumed as seafood by people in the US. Mammals are nowadays not considered as seafood because they are not consumed widely like before.

There are many classes in which fishes can be placed into. The classes depend on migratory behavior and the water depth the fish lives in. Major groups are diadromous, freshwater fishes, marine demersal, and marine pelagic. Fish that live at or near the surface are known as marine pelagic. They also get food near the surface. Larger species in this class are salmon, marlin, shark, swordfish, and tuna while small species are menhaden, herring, sardines, and sprats.

Fishes that occupy ocean beds are referred to as demersal fish. Their food sources which are made up mostly of crustaceans are found at the bed of oceans. Because they do not need strong muscles for swimming, their flesh is normally whiter than that of marine pelagic. Flatfish, stingrays, grouper, and cod are the key examples.

Fishe species that alternate habitats between fresh and sea water masses are called diadromous fish. They can live in fresh and salty waters. Examples of organisms include eels, salmon, lampreys, and shad. Lastly, like the name suggests, freshwater fishes inhabit lakes, rivers, ponds, and other bodies with fresh water. Examples are trout, tilapia, carp, and catfish. They are mostly reared on farms. Infact, they contribute to the largest portion of freshwater fishes in USA.

On the other hand, shellfish comprises of molluscs, crustaceans, and echinoderms. Molluscs do not have segmented bodies or any hard protective structures like crustaceans. Instead, they have calcareous shells which provide protection to the soft tissues of the body and grow as the organism grows. Major groups in this category are bivalves, gastropods, and cephalopods. Cephalopods are the only organisms in this group that lack a protective shell.

A protective shell in crustaceans is made of chitin. When cooked, the shell changes color to pink or red. Crustaceans are found at varying depths of the ocean. Some are found at the surface and others at the ocean bed. Key sub-groups in this category include shrimps, lobsters, krill, and crabs. Different species of organisms are found under the sub-groups named above.

These organisms can be prepared through many methods including broiling, baking, roasting, smoking, steaming, grilling, and frying. When prepared in the right way, any of these methods are able to produce delicious seafood meals. The meals can be served with other foods, fruits, and vegetables.

Cooked foods should be kept safely away from raw ones to avoid cross-contamination. All contaminated foods must be disposed off safely if cross-contamination is suspected. An alternative to disposal would be to feed it to farm animals like pigs. Before an after the organisms are handled, one should wash their hands properly.
