By Sharon Anderson

The very first action of this creature called man when it first appeared on this planet was to look for something to eat. No problem. Nature provided it with lush vegetation and plenty of wild game to hunt for meat. But the current situation is now different. Not only does it eat to meet the bodily requirement, it eats for pleasure. The sweet aroma of food wets the mouth and what could be more thrilling than to taste the world famous hot sauce New York fine dining.

The main source of human consumption is the other life forms on earth in plants and animals both in land and in oceans. The land provided fruits and vegetables. Wild berries were the first to be identified as edible when man saw bears eating berries. Fruits from trees that are eaten by birds gave early peoples and idea that if it does not harm other creatures that eat it then it should be safe.

Creatures on land were a source of protein. The meat of game and fowl always had preference in diet. In the middle ages vast hunting grounds were home to deer and wild boars. Other creatures eventually became domesticated and were raised in backyards. The goat was one of the earliest sources of meat and stealing one from another tribe caused skirmishes.

Early civilizations flourished beside the great rivers. Nearly all the great world rivers were home to early settlement as evidenced by archaeological artifacts that have been dug along its banks. Soil was very fertile in these areas and having a water source nearby was very advantageous to the population. One of the greatest civilizations had its beginning along the Nile River.

Homesteads were also hosts to live domestic animals whose wasted could be easily washed away by water from the river. Water accessibility is a big plus even during the early days. Annual inundations gave assurance of good crop harvest every cycle. This was further improved by digging ditches alongside plantations that automatically gave water to the crops. This was early irrigation.

Today the agriculture industry is a major contributor to the economy. Nations that are located in continuous landmasses are at a distinct advantage. Huge tracts can be cultivated for cash crops as well as livestock breeding and mass production. These products are easily sold in markets inside cities and communities. Subsidiary industries also prosper because of agricultural activities.

Farm products, be a crop or meat produces are hauled cross country from farms and distribution in markets inside cities. These end up in wet markets and department stores spread all over the city. A large portion is delivered to restaurant and hotels to be cooked and served to patrons. Modern cuisine has a wide array of influences.

Festivals are events where food runs aplenty. These are seasonal activities done by a community to commemorate a significant event or to honor a patron saint as in Hispanic fiestas. Special occasions like birthdays are celebrated with food for visitors and guests. The rich and the famous are more likely to engage in social fine dining.

The population explosion has jacked up the demand for food. The supply has to meet the demand. To this extent man has converted forest lands into farms. This has denied forest creatures of habitats and as a result the critters invade homes to scavenge of nutrition. National parks and wildlife safe areas have been established but this is not enough to restore ecological balance.
