Micronesia Flag History Today

By George Sans

The history of the modern Federated States of Micronesia is one of settlement by Micronesians; colonization by Spain, Germany, and Japan. The Federated States of Micronesia is composed of the island states of Yap, Chuuk (Truk), Pohnpei (Ponape), and Kosrae, all in the Caroline Islands. The islands vary geologically from high mountainous islands to low coral atolls, with volcanic outcroppings on Pohnpei, Kosrae, and Chuuk. They are located 3,200 mi (5,150 km) west-southwest of Hawaii, in the north Pacific Ocean.

To the west of the Federated States of Micronesia lies the Republic of Palau, also in the Caroline archipelago, and to the east is the Republic of the Marshall Islands. Those two countries, together with the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and the Federated States of Micronesia, were administered by the United States as the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands from 1947 to 1986.

The Micronesia flag was adopted on November 30, 1978. Micronesia became independent from the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands on November 3, 1986. The Territory was created in 1947. The Micronesia flag has been in use since 1962, but the number of stars has varied depending on the number of islands in the federation.

Efforts to forge a national identity were made in the mid- to late-1970's, with the creation of a constitutional convention and a referendum that approved the document. This was the official formation of the Federated States of Micronesia, which is now made up of four central districtsâ€"Kosrae, Pohnpei, Yap, and Chuuk. The new government was established in 1979, but the federation remained under US control until 1986, when the Compact of Free Association finally took effect. The Federated States of Micronesia became part of the United Nations in 1991.

The design of the Micronesia flag has its roots linked to the flag of the former Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. The colors of that flag were adopted from the flag of the United Nations.

Free association with the United States was achieved on November 3, 1986, and later a slight modification in the flag was made: dark blue was substituted for the “United Nations blue” of the original TTPI flag. The Flag Company Inc specialized in flag designs offered a special edition of decals and flags to memorize the history of Micronesia Flag for the future.
