The Risky Survivalist Story Of Aron Ralston

By Walter Campbell

If you are familiar with the movie 127 Hours last 2010, then be aware that the subject portrayed by James Franco was actually based from the life of Aron Lee Ralston of an accident that happened in Utah in 2003. What happened was he used a pocketknife in giving amputation to his right arm just to escape the boulder that blocked him from getting out in the Blue John Canyon in five days. As painful as that sounds, he managed to survive.

Being an outdoorsman, engineer, and motivational speaker had been his whole career before the incident took place. The reason he got into a critical situation was because he had been enjoying canyoneering and also hiking mountains like those fourteen thousand feet mountains at Colorado that he achieved. Let us all unravel the life of Aron Ralston and his tragic survivalist story for a deeper background.

It was in Utah, specifically at eastern Wayne County, where he was able to hike alone last April 26, 2003. What caused him to have a crushed right hand was due to a dislodged boulder when he arrived on a slot canyon. The biggest mistake is he did not give any information to anyone before which he was hiking so not a single person searched for him being stuck there.

He became sort of hopeless while staying there in five days and he slowly ate his two burritos and drank limited water while finding ways to get the arm out of the rock. On its third day, dehydration met his fate and he already got desperate in cutting his right arm. With the tourniquets he had at hand, he did experiments on how to properly cut by amputating a forearm to practice.

Day four gave him an idea that he really had to amputate through the bones even though he did not have the proper tools to do it. In addition, he forced himself in drinking his urine since he ran out of something to eat or drink on the fifth. His videotape still worked so he utilized it in saying goodbyes to the people that matter to him and even carved his name, birth date, and his assumed death date at the sandstone wall.

He only had the two inch knife in engaging the cutting session by himself. Due to the carvings, the knife became even duller than before. Out of desperation, he withstood it in the long run.

He was already single handed but he had to hike out with the extreme heat of the sun and he had no phone in his ride too. Luckily, he found a family on a trip from the Netherlands. In the process of alerting the right authorities to save him, they gave him some water and Oreos for a while.

He lost a lot of weight which was forty pounds so it was a miracle that he did not die while bleeding. With a helicopter, he got rescued at last. He was actually in a condition of having his arm chopped off for six hours without medical help.

He said that he might be dead if he only wanted to be rescued. In returning to the site, fact was that thirteen men have to push a boulder. He also scattered ashes of his cremated arm in the area.
