How Emergency Kits Can Save Lives

A disaster can strike in any place and at any time. You could be at home, at work, in school or driving in the car when something happens but regardless of where you are, it pays to be prepared. Many people fail to think about taking the proper precautions ahead of time like preparing an emergency kit and keeping it in a location that is easy to access. The chances of survival following an accident or natural disaster are dramatically better with the proper supplies at hand. There are several different types of disaster kits available and choosing the right one for your needs is the key to making it through a crisis as best you can.

Emergency kits are made in many different sizes and the contents are tailored to be used in specific locations and under certain adverse conditions. The average household kit is ideal for any family home. A portable kit may be kept on hand for family vacations and daytime outings. Many local outlet stores will carry some kind of basic kit and many will have specialized packages. Consumer can also shop for a disaster kit online. There are several retailers with websites devoted to various types of survival gear. It is possible to find a kit specifically for use in an office or classroom. A personal survival pack may be carried in a pocket or backpack. Always analyze your specific needs and choose a kit accordingly.

The average fanny pack style survival package holds enough emergency supplies for a trip that lasts approximately three days. It will include things like nonperishable food, a compass, a simple shelter, some bottled water, some kind of signaling device, a flint stone and other assorted items. For handling a disaster involving a boat or even a major rain event, it will be helpful to have a water survival pack. This is something that will best serve a pilot, fisherman, cruise tourist, someone living on a houseboat or a family whose home is located in a flood zone. It will contain many of the same basic items as any survival pack, including water, food and blankets. It should also have some basic fishing gear, sunscreen, a canteen, assorted bandages, sun screen for protection from the elements, flares, strobe lights and some sort of waterproof device that can be used to light a fire.

Pocket Survival Emergency and Disaster Kits. Pocket survival kits are generally small and can be carried in one's pocket itself (as the name suggests). Pocket kits are generally used by people who are on frequent outings, or by those who go for camping or pursue adventure sports. Trekkers, campers, cyclists, hunters are among the ones to use this survival kit. All the basic survival tools like compass, rescue whistles, knife, fishing cords, flashlights, duct tape etc are present among the components in the pack. Backpack Survival Kit/Bucket Emergency Kits. Both of these kits are easy to carry. They generally contains almost all the survival supplies like first aid, proper shelter equipment, emergency food, water communication product, and more. It could be a best kit in case of an general emergency or in surviving post an earthquake, flood or even a forest fire.

Always choose a kit according to your own specific requirements. Consider where you are going and what type of terrain you will encounter during your trip. Always check the weather forecast so you know what to expect. Survival items should always be properly stored and periodically inspected for any kind of damage. Item quality will often vary according to package but they will all have the basic items needed to survive a disaster.
