Chick Peas, Fava Beans And Other Healthy Choices

By Brian Olson

Over the last century people have begun to live longer because of medical advances. Part of these advances have provided a large amount of information for people to make healthier choices in their diets. More people have moved away from eating lots of red meat based dishes to substituting black, red, and even fava beans for the protein portion of the diet.

Concerns regarding health and physical ailments have seen a push to seek more choices in different foods to both enhance and improve diets. The choices that are presented are often focused on dealing with obesity, hypertension, and diabetic increases. Though still popular, the traditional meat and potatoes is being quickly subverted with healthier choices for those who cannot continue to enjoy the former type of meal. Creative practices have expanded the choices in meal preparation.

Vegetarians and vegans do not use meat based foods in their diets. Without pork, beef, fish, and poultry in the diet there is a problem with lack of proper proteins, fats, and vitamins needed. These must be replaced by other foods rich in the properties. Quinoa, lentils and other legumes are rich in these essential proteins and vitamins needed for the diet.

The advancement in medical practice has helped find that some citizens are unable to process meats. Of the various reasons, lacking the needed enzymes or having a lower acid level in the stomach can force any person to leave meat meals behind. In these cases, it is vitally important to discover substitutions to be able to maintain what the body needs to stay healthy.

Legumes are a great source for fats, proteins, and carbohydrates. These all need to be included in a healthy diet. Because the meat groups provide most of the fat and protein in a healthy diet, using different legumes as a replacement is essential. Nuts, peas, beans and lentils are all part of the legume family.

Soy milk, burgers, and other bean based products have come a long way in both flavor and availability. In the last fifty years the alternative burgers, milk products, and general meal choices have improved greatly as the need and popularity of healthier choices has increased. Even restaurants are getting into the game as they offer vegetarian friendly meal choices. Knowing it is not just a fad, but a dietary need has helped push the need for flavorful choices to the forefront.

Fresh or canned items abound. Those with great cooking skills are able to store and prepare fresh or dried products. Some with limited time or skills may find buying canned or frozen versions of bean based products just as healthy. Though freshly made is nearly always better, the canned and frozen versions have improved their vitamin counts as people have become more aware of what is in the can.

For some, avoiding meat is a choice. For others, avoiding meat is a requirement. Making healthier choices has become a major factor in the lives of many people. These choices have moved several industries to adjust. No matter the reason, alternative protein choices has been forced over the last century to fill the need made through both popularity and need.
