Portugal Flag And The Flag Company Inc

By Alfred Blue

The national flag of Portugal was officially adopted on the 30th day of June 1911. It is known to be a rectangular bicolor, with red and green for its national color combination. The colors are divided unevenly, with red on the fly and green on the hoist. The boundary between the two colors is designed with the Portuguese coat of arms.

The flag of Portugal consists of two vertical stripes - the left stripe is green and the right one is a shade of red. The stripes are uneven as the green stripe takes up two-fifths of the flag's length and the red stripe takes up the remaining three-fifths. A coat of arms with the country's traditional shield is centered on the Portuguese flag where the two colors meet.

The choice of red and green as the colors of the Portuguese flag can be associated with the many major events that happened in Portugal. The colors were said to represent a change which is inspired by the radical republic especially after they broke their bond with their former religious monarchical flag. After failing to establish a republican insurrection in 1891, the red and green color had been made as the official colors of the Republican Party of Portugal. These colors are even used to symbolize the Republic’s associated movements.

After decades of using the flag, the colors are finally known to have a lot of representation for the Portuguese. But among its most popular representations are hope for the nation which is represented by green and the blood of those people who died while defending the nation, which is represented by red.

After the republican revolution in 1910, a number of different flag designs were proposed for the new republic and this sparked a large and not always peaceful debate. The main question was whether to keep the traditional liberal colors of the monarchy (blue and white) or adopt the red and green of the Republican Party. The red and green proposal won.

There is a barrage of cheap and inferior Portugal flags being imported and sold, that do not comply with the flag statute. This is bad for a number of reasons. Some flags are cheaply made and more importantly, the designs, materials, colors, and methods of printing do not compare well with the better quality, longer-lasting, and correctly designed flags. The Flag Company Inc specialized in flag designs offered a special edition of decals and flags to memorize the history of Portugal future.
