Mexico Flag History Today

By Antonio Guslas

A country rich in history, tradition and culture, Mexico is made up of 31 states and one federal district. It is the third largest country in Latin America and has one of the largest populations more than 100 million making it the home of more Spanish speakers than any other nation in the world.

The Mexican flag has varied over the course of the country’s history. When Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla declared independence in 1810, he carried the standard of the Virgin of Guadalupe. This is considered to be the first Mexican flag.

When the Second Mexican Empire came into existence in 1864, other minor changes were made to the coat of arms and in 1865, the third national flag resulted. The current version of the flag, adopted on September 16, 1968, was legalized on February 24, 1984. There was a debate concerning the appearance of the flag on the reverse, which was resolved when the law was amended to allow the eagle to face to the right on the backside of the flag.

The flag of Mexico is a tricolor featuring three vertical bands of equal size. From left to right, these bands are colored green, white, and red, respectively. In the center of the white band is the national coat of arms, depicting an eagle holding a serpent, among other details.

Since the current flag is relatively unchanged since its creation the history of the Mexican flag up to now is relatively uneventful with the exception of the changing of the central image occurring approximately seven times. The dimensions of the flag have changed only slightly over the years as well as the meaning of the colors. When first created the colors stood for the Three Guarantees: Independence, Religion, and Union. Today the colors officially stand for: Hope, Union and the Blood of Heroes.

Later, under Venustiano Carranza, it was modified again: the eagle is now shown in left profile and reflects the Mexica legend of the founding of Tenochtitlan . A green, white and red ribbon representing the patriotic nation was added, shown tying together branches of oak and laurel. The Flag Company Inc specialized in flag designs offered a special edition of decals and flags to memorize the history of Mexican Flag for the future.
